Preparing for an Australian English test — where to start

Which test should you actually sit
For Australian PR and most student visas, PTE Academic and IELTS are interchangeable in the eyes of the Department of Home Affairs — you get the same points for equivalent scores. The difference is how they are marked. PTE is computer-scored, results land in days, and it rewards consistency over expression. IELTS Speaking is a conversation with a human examiner, which suits some candidates and unsettles others.
LanguageCert is a third accepted option and is often overlooked. CELPIP matters if Canada is your backup pathway. PTE Core is the Canadian sibling of PTE Academic and is not accepted for Australian PR — a mix-up that costs people a full test fee.
NAATI CCL is a different animal: it is not an English test at all. It is a credentialled community language test worth five points on a skilled migration application, and it stacks on top of your English score rather than replacing it.
What score do you need
Work backwards from the visa, not from the test. Competent English clears the threshold for many subclasses; Proficient and Superior English are what add points. In PTE Academic terms, Superior English means 79 or above in each of the four communicative skills — and a large number of candidates over-prepare for Superior when their points total does not need it.
Professional registration is its own category. AHPRA, engineering and accounting bodies each set their own thresholds, and they are not always the same as the visa requirement. Check the requirement for your specific pathway on the Department of Home Affairs site or with your registering body before you set a target, since these change without much notice.

How preparation works here
Classes are live and online, running weekday mornings and evenings on Melbourne time, with students joining from every state. Group classes cap at four so a trainer hears every student in every session. One-to-one sessions are available where a specific weakness needs dismantling rather than a general course.
Between sessions you practise in a portal that scores Speaking and Writing against the published exam criteria, so you are working from marks rather than from a feeling about how it went. Full mock tests run weekly with written feedback back inside 24 hours.
Every trainer on the roster has sat the exam they teach — 79+ in PTE, a NAATI CCL pass — which is the difference between being handed a template and being told where the template stops working.
Most students starting from a competent level reach their target in four to eight weeks. If you complete a program and have not reached your target, you keep attending group classes at no further cost for up to six months. That is a commitment about teaching time, not a promise about your exam result — no coaching provider controls the marking.
