What is actually being assessed

CCL is not an English test in the way PTE or IELTS is. Nobody is marking your essay writing. You hear a segment of up to 35 words, once, and you reproduce its meaning in the other language. You need 63 out of 90 overall with a floor of 29 in each of the two dialogues.

The three habits that cost marks

Omission — a number, a date, a conditional clause dropped from the tail of a segment. Distortion — the meaning bends slightly while the gist survives. Register drift — a lawyer's precise phrasing rendered as everyday speech. Sydney candidates are typically bilingual from childhood and assume fluency is enough; these three are habits, and habits respond to marking rather than to more conversation.

Memory is the real constraint

Thirty-five words is longer than it sounds when you are translating at the same time and cannot rely on notes. Most people hold about half of it accurately on a first attempt, then start losing the end of the segment. That capacity is trainable in stages, which is what structured segment practice is for.
